Dollar Dance/Dollar Dash?

Just got home from a wedding where instead of the dollar dance they did a dollar dash.  DJ played a song, bridesmaids and groomsmen ran around the room gathering up money people were holding up.  It was a "game" to see who could raise the most for the couple- the BMs or GsM.

I would say around here, the dollar dance, pretty standard. I can't think of a wedding I've attended that didn't have one. (not that that makes it ok) but this was a new one I've never heard of. Is this a real thing, or did they just make i tup because they didn't want to dance with people?
