Dilated then Not??????

I was in the hospital at 34 and then 35 weeks for preterm labor. Each time, more than one nurse checked and said I was dilated at a 2 and was 50% effaced. It was very painful when they checked and they said my cervix was weird because it was slightly closer to my left side. The doctor never checked those times. When I went in Thursday at just shy of 37 weeks, the doctor checked for dilation because I was having consistent contractions again. I barely felt him check and there was no pain but he didn't say anything other than I don't feel anything. Are the nurses wrong or could the doctor be wrong. He seemed a bit in a hurry. He didn't say anything about my cervix feeling a bit weird or anything. Anybody else have this experience?
