can you tell if your dilated?

i've been having this sharp pain, and pressure on my cervix. I think the baby is slowly dropping, but I was wondering if it was something more. I heard it could either be dilation, or the baby just pinching a nerve near the cervix. Can you tell if your dilated or not?
