Root canal?

I went to the dentist today and I might need a root canal. She asked that I get the OK from my doctor for Xrays and a local anesthesia. The whole thing makes me nervous. I don't want to endanger the baby either way by getting the work done or by waiting it out. I'm almost 18 weeks. Has anyone else had major dental work while pregnant?
