Need advice on weaning!

My DS is weaned except for at nap time and bedtime. I'm hoping to get him completely weaned by 18 months (he's 16 months now). I've tried to stop nursing to sleep at nap time but we've had the worst luck! I know a lot of people say to wait until he's ready... But I can tell that he's nursing for comfort, not nutrition. Any advice on how to get him to sleep without nursing? It seems like he will just cry nonstop and not sleep...
