cloth diapers vs. disposable

My husband and I went to a class at our hospital and they were saying cloth diapering can save a grand or more a year.  We were a bit shocked but I'm skeptical.  I noticed cloth diapers (the all in ones that you can just throw in the wash all together) are about $18 and it says they will work for a baby between 7-20 pounds (so I think that's up to a size 2 in disposable diapers).  How long will baby be under 20 pounds?!?!?  Does anyone have any experience with cloth diapering?  What are your experiences?  Thank you!
