S/O big purchases: used baby stuff

We're hoping to eventually get a lot of stuff second hand/used/consignment/whatever you want to call it. However, I know there are some items that might have safety issues - but I really have no idea WHAT items those are.

So, what would you be comfortable using second hand? Anything you definitely WOULDN'T be ok using (I'm assuming car seat and crib, but those are honestly just guesses)? Are there any resources you know about that has info on this type of thing?
