Sudden blisters on nipples after pumping

Hello,

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this issue or has had an experience with it.

My wife uses an Ameda breast pump for milk. The same blue one they use in the hospital. There are two small white pieces on the pump which help express the milk out and recently they started to tear. We had back ups and just yesterday my wife put the new ones on. She immediately noticed a big difference in suction.

What she wasn't expecting was suddenly now, after 5 months of pumping, she got a huge 'blood blister on one of her nipples' and two smaller clear blisters on the other. She's NEVER had this problem before. Even when we first started using the pump months ago when it was brand new.  All we did was switch out the white little pieces for newer ones; mind you the originals were new in the beginning and she didn't have this problem.

Anyone had this issue or know what to do? She's terrified at pumping now because she doesn't want the blisters to pop but we can't just pop them either because they would be an open sore right where the milks comes out of the  nipple.  She is afraid because also she hasn't pumped all day.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!!
