How do I know if frozen milk is bad?

I have a stash of breastmilk in our freezer (above our fridge). Some is now 5 months old. I thawed one bag last week and it smelled kind of like formula. I didn't use it because I thought that was strange. What does it smell like if its bad? Thanks!
