Checking fluid? Possible TMI

So I had a bit of funky brownish watery discharge when I went to the bathroom a while ago, and it weirded me out enough to call the OB. I mostly wanted to rule out infection. I was surprised when they told me to take my happy self to LD to make sure it wasn't my amniotic fluid leaking, so that's where DH and I will be heading when I get home from work on my way now.

My question is how do they check your fluid level? Ultrasound? I just wanted to know what to expect. I'm not terribly worried, I feel like there would be much more of it if it was amniotic fluid, but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry!
