mucous plug question

Is it possible to slowly lose your mucous plug over a period of weeks? I've had a mucous-y discharge (sorry for the TMI) for the past couple weeks. Is that just normal third tri discharge, or mucous plug, or could it be something more serious, like an infection? I'm probably reading into it too much... just wondering if anyone has any input..TIA!
