flat nipples/general BF advice?

long story short, i gave up nursing after a week.  it was very painful and i didn't think LO was getting enough b/c of number of wet diapers.  it was a very emotional decision for me to switch to FF and looking back i wish i would've tried harder/asked for more help. 

Anyway, i am thinking ahead to next time and hoping the experience will be different.  Seeing all the support and knowledge you ladies give on this board gives me hope.  

when i was pregnant i never gave flat nipples a thought b/c i thought a good latch would solve that issue.  Anyone have alot of pain w/ flat nipples even though you had a good latch?  Any other tips for next time?  TIA
