Family portraits (opinions needed)

So SO brought up the topic of family portraits today and how he thought it's time we should get some done. The kicker is he doesn't want to do the typical poses (which I understand, I hated how every family had the same poses when I was shooting at a studio).

Would it be appropriate to incorperate our lifestyle in the photos? For lack of a better description we're "Alternative" (tattooed, pierced, Rockabilly styled) who have a passion for vinyl and art. Trying to incorperate that into the same boring poses make us look like we're aliens. Seriously, our last photos were a total disaster. 

 Also, we plan on doing our long awated Handfasting ceremony before the shoot and would it be apporopriate to incorperate aspects from the ceremony like the cord that tied our hands? 

Sorry if this is tl:dr. Kinda spinning my head thinking about this. 

Do any of you know any good sites to get inspiration?
