"Boy" and "girl" toys

I had Gabe with me at Walmart this morning because one of my cousins, a 4 year old girl's birthday is next weekend and I needed to get her a present. Gabe giggled and really brightened up when he saw the baby doll I got for my cousin, so I figured "what the hell", and got him a smaller dollbaby. He held this doll all the way home, kissing it and patting it's head.

Well, you would have thought I'd put him in a dress and called him "Missy" the way his dad and my FMIL went on. I really see nothing wrong with it, especially because it's teaching him to be nice and gentle to a little baby. We have two sets of friends with newborn babies, and we want Gabe to be able to play with them eventually.

So what's your take? Are there really "boy" toys and "girl" toys?
