The ped recently gave us vitamin D drops to give to my LO. She explained that breast milk is deficient in vitamin D and that he should take a drop a day by mouth. I have not been giving it to him because the thought of breast milk being deficient in anything sounds ridiculous to me- it's the very best thing you can give to your baby! I am also taking prenatal vitamins that contain vitamin D- isn't that passed onto the baby? I am just starting to feel a little guilty about not following doctors orders and was wondering if giving the drops is a common practice among the women on this board. Do you think I should start giving the drops? My LO is a very happy and healthy 6 week old- no problems other than the fact that he was born at 37 weeks and still has a fading/draining hematoma on his head that is causing some jaundice yellowing to stick around in his eyes.
