Confused about Child Support

The lawyer I spoke with said that CS is based off what they made on average in the last 3 years. Is this true or did i misunderstand him?

My husband is about to be discharged from the military in the next 2 months or so. He doesn't have a job on the outside yet so I have no idea how much he will make compared to what he's been making the last 5 years.

There are pros and cons to remaining married until he is OUT of the military and i'm trying to make the best choice for me and the boys. If CS is based off the last 3 years then it won't matter WHEN i file. If CS is based off the "right now" and he gets a job at mcdonalds then i need to file NOW and not wait.
