Tell Me About Your Growth Scan

Does everybody get one of these? Does it normally take about 1/2 hour? What are they (ultrasound tech & OB) doing that it takes that long? Is it internal or external?

ETA: To clarify, I am inquiring about the 3rd tri growth scan, not the 2nd tri anatomy scan
