car seat position???

We just installed our car seat and someone suggested we change the seat it's in.  We put it in the back seat on the passenger side, facing back.  We have an S.U.V. with three seats and three seat belts in the back and someone suggested that we install the car seat in the middle back seat.  I wonder if that's a better seat because it would be safer if we got hit on either side of the car and it would be easier to put the baby in and out from either door.  I plan on checking with the fire/police dept but in the mean time I wonder what you girls think?  Anyone else put the car seat in th center seat?
