U/S right before birth? Why Not.

Since DS was my first, i asked in L&D if they were going to do an U/S to check the baby's position before i start labor.  I was basically told ....um no....why would we do that?  Well i was just curious....as it was my first.

After i pushed for 5 hours, had a 4th degree tear....we learned that DS was face up and had one arm up like superman.  Thats why it took so long to get him out.

My question......is it that uncommon to get an U/S right before birth just to check to make sure the baby is in the right place?  I always hear that the doctor can "feel" that everything is ok.  Well....he was wrong with DS and i paid the price for it.
