Mattress wrapping

So a friend told me about mattress wrapping (if you havent heard of it you can read a little more here http://www.stopsidsnow.com/SuccessOfMattressWrapping.html) 

I'm thinking I might try it but I don't understand why I can't use a matress pad.  I understand it wouldn't be extremely necessary because your mattress would be protected because of the wrap but still.. its softer for baby and more absorbent for leaks if you use one...

Hmm.. Anyone have thoughts on matress wrapping? Is it worth it?  IDK the idea of plastic on my baby's matress seems worse than just the matress itself.
