Maternity Underwear- Necessity or waste of money?

One of the previously unheard of things about pregnancy that is boggling my mind at the moment is maternity underwear. I read about them in one of my baby books over the weekend. Up until now, I just figured regular old underwear would do- sits below the belly, absorbs all the extra CM, comfortable. For those of you a bit further along or not on your first, please enlighten me. Is maternity underwear something I should consider buying?
