Belly button piercing.

I removed my piercing early on at about 8 weeks. I had it done about 7 years ago so it should be a completely healed piercing. Today I woke up to pain at the piercing site. Its red swollen and had puss coming out. Obviously infected. Has anyone had this happen? If so did you talk to your dr about it? I am surprised to see it infected after having had the piercing so long. Wondering if it is constantly getting stretched and opening it up more? What do you think?
