Maternity Leave

I know there is a post about not coming back after maternity leave, but my question is can an employer legally ask you if you are or not?

 I know if you don't come back and you don't tell them it burns the bridge and it will be hard to find another job, but my manager asked so casually that it through me off guard.  He isn't my immediate manager so he wouldn't be the one I would talk to about it anyway.

Back to my original question; can an employer legally ask you anything about your pregnancy?
