April 2011 Moms

Yikes. Ladies, go to the dentist!

I had a cleaning in November, and another one this morning. The big alarm, as we all know, in pregnancy dental care is gum disease, because that can affect the baby - I was fine on that front.

But apparently you can also develop pregnancy-specific sores on the gum line that need to be watched. It has nothing to do with infection, and everything to do w/ hormones. They assured me there was no danger to the baby or pregnancy - I will of course be confirming that with my OB - but I need to go back after April to have them look at it again, and monitor it on my end in the meantime.

Most of the time, when the hormones regulate after the baby arrives, they go away, but sometimes they can get big enough to need surgery. t's not at all painful, but now that they pointed it out to me, I can't believe I didn't see it.

So, at the risk of sounding like your mother, go to the dentist! Esp. if you notice any small, red spots right at the gum line.

ETA: Sorry if this is common knowledge. I had no idea.
