putting self in timeout... help

So we have discovered the power of timeout. Greyson is wonderful about it, I give him a warning, he acts out again, we go to timeout, he cries, I explain and we kiss and make up. Perfect right?

Wrong... now he sees that we are getting mad (say at kicking while getting his diaper changed) and instead of changing the behavior asks for timeout. I feel like this is some how rewarding him for the initial bad behavior and still doesn't get his diaper changed. Then this morning he just went ahead and put himself in timeout for no reason. While it was a little cute, DH says that Greyson has just taken all of the timeout power away from us.

Do you have any thoughts on this? Should I find a different method?

If you don't use timeout what do you use that is a successful method for quick change in behavior?
