getting hair highlighted?

Is it okay to get your hair highlighted??  I've read that it is okay to get highlights but not dark dye.  I'm feeling so depressed about my looks b/c i can't go tanning and my face is breaking out like crazy, i need to do something to make myself feel better!! I want to get a few highlights underneath my hair, and or like the ombre look so the dye would not touch my roots.  I'm going to ask my doctor next week to make sure its okay before I do it, but as we all know, doctors aren't always 100% right.  So I'd love to get some thoughts!  Thanks!
