Could baby still be turning often?

Baby was transverse at my last ultrasound (28 weeks) - it is very easy to tell because he is a rather long baby and I can feel his head on my left side and get strong kicks on the far right side. I have been CERTAIN that he turned to head down three times now- Movement is mostly on one side (left), with the bulk of 'baby' in the middle...my symptoms get MUCH more unpleasant when the baby is lying this way. My pelvis, hips and crotch hurt really bad, breathing is more difficult, etc. So assuming I'm not nuts, isn't it strange for baby to keep turning like this? I am so uncomfortable when baby is in head down that I am wondering if he is also uncomfortable lying that way, so he keeps moving back to transverse. Maybe he doesn't fit?
