Nursing and sleep association

He only way our DS will go to sleep is to be nursed asleep.   I have tried to put him down "drowsy but awake" and it does not work.  When he wakes up in the night the only way to get him back to sleep is to nurse him.  I am reading that this can be a problem because the baby will associate nursing with sleep and never be able to fall asleep on his own.  Has anyone heard of this or have any advice to get baby to sleep without nursing?
