Crib safety ratings

Can someone please explain to me how crib safety ratings can possibly change so often? I have a couple of used cribs that have been offered to me from family/friends who have toddlers now. But I was just reading in another post that the safety ratings changed this year. What exactly changes? And how did all of us survive?

I'm so aggravated with the thought of purchasing brand new, very expensive nursery furniture just because some ratings changed that I don't fully understand. I had planned to use the hand-me downs for nursery furniture and invest in nice, new furniture when they got old enough to need twin beds.
