NPR: Anyone else have an "invalid" last name?

I just tried to create a membership on a website and it kept rejecting my information saying "Please enter a valid last name." WTF? I have a foreign surname that starts with a lowercase letter and has a space in it. Think "de Ville". This has happened to me a lot. I get mail for Firstname Ville or De Ville (as if de is my FN). Most companies  completely bleach out all ethnicity and just write "Deville" like they are passive-aggressively protesting anything that's not Smith (sorry to all Ms. Smiths- no offense). I've even been accused of not spelling my LN correctly (yes, you Mrs. G, my 4th grade English teacher!) Does anyone else's name get butchered?
