crying themselves to sleep?

does anyone else let their babies cry themselves to sleep? our pediatrician told us to let him cry and soothe himself. It's so hard for me to let him do, sounds like he wants to be picked up or needs something....i feel bad when I hear him cry and he has actual tears :-(
