What do you do when your LO is an overtired mess?

My LO did not nap very long today, possibly because we tried the crib. We put him down after he was clearly tired around 6:30 and he woke up 5 minutes later. He was perfectly content sitting up wide awake, but he looks so exhausted and is showing all the sleepy signs, so we tried to rock him and now he is grumpy and screaming. How do you get an overtired LO to sleep and what do you do when they get up after 5 minutes? This is so frustrating!!!
