Car ride to make lo fall asleep? And scary incident.

For the last two nights we have been out running errands that ran into Los bedtime and she fell asleep in her carseat, when we got home I put her in the PNP and she stayed asleep. Tonight I tried our normal bedtime routine and got the normal fussy time and crying. She lost her breath during crying and choked on mucous and her face turned purple. It was really scary and I didn't want to take the chance of it happening again so I put her in the car and she fell asleep two minutes into the ride. Will this form a habit if I do it often? I do not want to rely on the car to put her to sleep but at the same time I feel awful when she cries so hard. She puts herself to sleep for naps with no fussing so it's just bedtime. Anyone else do this? Advice?
