My son, the self mutilating 5 month old

My 5 month old son is extremely attached to me. When I say extremely I mean I barely get to take a shower once a week because he is always conjoined with me. I hate to admit it, but i've taken him with me to the potty on numerous ocasions, that being said... anytime I put him down for more than a couple seconds he gets horribly upset and gouges at his flesh. He pulls his hair, he flails, he screams. The top of his head looks like a dog attacked it, he has cuts down both legs from his toenails, and assorted cuts on his nose, mouth, ears, and such. I have tried putting socks on him, hats, and he pulls or squirms his way out of them. I'm at a loss...any body else go thru this?? Any ideas of things I could do or try?
