prefold help

I seem to be having trouble with my diapering technique.  I have thirsty's duo wraps and bummies whisper wraps, and I really like them, but I have issues keeping the gussets dry.  It's not getting her clothes wet, but still I hate to have to get a new cover every time I get a new prefold.  I'm trying to fold them so that the prefold doesn't actually touch the gussets, but apparently that's still not working.  I would just trifold it, but that doesn't hold in poop.  I've been using the old school fold.  Occasionally I'll use the twist.  What am I doing wrong?  Why isn't the material at the edge of the gussets waterproof too??  Anyone have any suggestions?
