Is feeding on demand ever a bad thing?

I'm a FTM and I swear my LO eats constantly! He is FF, and eats 3.5 oz every 1.5-2 hours during the day, then 2-3oz every 3 or 4 hours at night.

I get a lot of criticism from family that I use a bottle to stop his crying, but that's all he wants!

Isn't the goal for how much to eat in a day 2.5oz/lb? LO is 4 weeks and weighs 11lbs. He was 9lbs 15oz at birth.
