If you have a playroom in the basement

Do you keep anything upstairs in your living room? We've been trying to carve out an area in our basement for Ian's play area. I'm trying to figure out what should go downstairs, and whether we should keep some things upstairs for him to play with. He's at a stage right now that he wants us with us when he plays, so I don't even know if having everything downstairs will entice him to play there more or not. I just can't stand all of the toys taking over our living room!
