s/o vacuums

We have mostly hardwood - but a few area rugs. The playroom and another room off the kitchen (where the kids eat sometimes) has carpet...so we need a decent vacuum.

Question - do you vacuum up food? Or do you pick it up by hand and then vacuum crumbs. I feel like the time it takes me to crawl around picking up food pieces everywhere is stupid but I can't vacuum it up because then the vaccum gets all smelly (ick!!) due to food getting stuck in there somewhere.
