Ecover - when do you add?

We picked up some Ecover fabric softener today because DH has been griping about static (actually, I left some things in the dryer for far too long last night, and when he pulled them out he apparently got shocked in a very sensitive place.  That was the last straw).  I just started a load of his work clothes, and I'd like to use it.  The instructions say to add during the last rinse.  How do you all handle this?  Run an extra rinse with Ecover?  Add earlier?  Keep a close eye on the washer, run down and add it at the exact right time?  I can tell you all right now that the last one isn't going to be happening in this household...
