Compression Hose

I've been having swelling pretty much every day for the last few weeks. My doctor suggested that I get some compression socks/hose. I'm just curious from anyone else that's wearing them how tight they should be? I tried pulling these on (size medium) and I think my husband is going to have to help me b/c they are tight. I also bought the firm, but maybe the moderate or mild would have been good enough? Sorry, I'm just completely clueless. Any feedback would be great.
