Scared of his own shadow....

Does anybody else have like the most cautious kid on the planet?! He's so afraid to try anything new, but once he does he normally likes it. For instance today we went to the splash pad, he used to love the water, today he had a complete meltdown and went screaming and running for the car. I didnt want to force the issue so we went home( we tried twice to show him how fun it was) but i don't want him to be the kid that is afraid of everything, any tips?!
