Question: Registry preferences

We will officially announce later today, and already a friend who has known from early on, offered to host a shower.

On the way to Doctor yesterday, I was talking about Craigslist for some big items I didn't think people can afford to get us like a crib, and how I already found one that converts to a toddler bed for $75 and the shower friend from above offered to help move it to our house.

Hubby said something like "Why don't we just make whispers to our families that we really want a crib?"

I think suggesting specific gifts that you want from a registry to gift-givers is a bit tacky.  Shouldn't it be their choice as it is a "gift?"  What do you ladies think?
