Baby Showers

Thank you question...

A little back story: I've been working for a firm for about three years and the partners and a lot of us "kids" are all family friends having since we have grown up together and are fairly close in age.  Therefore my host invited them to my baby shower this Saturday.  As expected, some people are not able to make it to the shower and their husbands dropped off a gift at my desk while I was not there.

Since I feel really awkward and uncomfortable opening anything (even the cards) before my shower and especially at work I just brought them home with me at the end of the work day.  I plan to write a sincere thank you ASAP and send it through the mail but should I acknowledge the gift in person at work as well? Would you hand a thank you to them instead of mailing it or do both? I always thought that sending it through the mail was more polite?? I don't want to be rude so I figured you ladies would be able to give some advice...
