sleeping all day

DS was born at 36w and us 4w old now. He has been sleeping around the clock since he was born. He wakes almost every 2 hours to eat, but other than that, he's almost always sleeping. Just recently he actually started to stay awake maybe an hour once or twice a day. When does this change? Will it be gradual or will he suddenly start staying awake a lot longer? I know all babies are different, and from what I remember DS1 wasn't like this. I'm just curious about your experiences with extra sleepy newborns.
