Gift etiquette

I wasn't invited to the baby shower of a (now) friend. We weren't close around the time of the shower (my husband and her husband were friends and we knew each other through them) We have since started a friendship though! She just went into labour and I would like to send a gift card from the place where she is registered with a congratulatory note. Is that ok to do or would it be weird?
