Gee, thanks dad! Bad luck?

My dad was visiting my grandmother this weekend and told her that my step mother, mom, and MIL were throwing us a shower. She responded with "Having a shower is asking for your baby to die before birth." And said that she was forbidding anyone from my dad's family from attending. Apparently showers are considered bad luck in my dad's family...? but I feel like if those were the words she used, my dad could have probably filtered it a bit better and just said "She believes it's bad luck, so they're not coming" I lost it for at least an hour- thanks hormones!

That being said has anyone else heard of this? Is it bad luck for any of your families? I've heard of not setting up the nursery, but the shower thing was new to me!
