how the heck do you eat a pineapple core?

I tried eating one this morning and it's like eating a corncob! I felt like a cave woman gnawing on a bone. Has anyone else tried this? I figured if all I have to do is eat a bunch a pineapple and the core it's worth a shot, but I just don't know how to get it down!
