Vitamin K

My midwife said something about vitamin k for the baby in the hospital but I could easily opt out of it if I wanted. I did research on it and it sounds like a good thing to get. When I was chatting with all the other moms at a family party, not 1 of them has heard of this or even had the option to get it for their babies and their births were recent. Is this standard practice or more or an optional thing?
