To Shower or Not to Shower

My mom has offered to throw me a shower.  But the caveat is we don't know a lot of people in the area, so the guest list would be varied.  IE, Mom, Me, Sister, about 5 of my friends, 5 of Mom's friends, and a smattering of random others who have asked to be invited if I have one.  So 20 people tops, if everyone were able to come (which is more than a great number).  To me it seems a little gift grabby to throw a shower with such a random collection of people, I'm afraid people will think something along the lines of "they really had to scrape the bottom of the barrel to get people here didn't they?"  Granted I've been to two showers in my life, all with my In-Laws who have a huge family.  Should I have one with the random group, or just skip it?
