Bassinet vs. Pack & Play

Hi Ladies... just wondering what you guys are using when the baby is born?  I registered for a bassinet but now that I have it I feel like the money would be better spent on the pack and play which can be used way longer.  My impression is that the bassinet is really only used for the first few months.  I'm a first time mom so I'm a little clueless on this... any help is much appreciated.  Thanks!!
